I began this series for the Paper Quilt Exhibition in Lawrence, MA by thinking of all the medical papers I have filed away from the past five years – all numbers, charts and graphs attempting to explain that which remains a mystery. The documents mean everything and nothing. What is the visual manifestation of these medical documents? Needles, injectable hormones, radiographs of my body – all of which become ghostly blue recordings.
Like Louise Bourgeois – who talks about taking the fear out of something by making it – I want to take the loss and sadness out of this experience. My photograms are a homage to Felix Gonzalez-Torres (who faced medical records of far more dire consequence than I) and his power to transcend loss.
